Configuring the Palm OS Emulator for Synchronization via Network Connection

Using the Emulator to synchronize via network connection is very much like using an actual device to synchronize via a dial-up, Network HotSync connection. The Emulator is configured to use a network port (acting like a Network HotSync connection) on the Windows workstation, while HotSync Manager is configured to accept a Network HotSync connection. The following equipment is required to configure the Emulator for synchronization via network connection:

  • Palm OS Emulator version 2.1d26 or later. (Note: This method should work for earlier versions of the Emulator, but has only been verified for version 2.1d26 or later.)
  • Palm Desktop software version 3.0.1 or later.
  • Windows 95/98/NT workstation with networking enabled and configured.
  • Palm OS software version 3.1 ROM image or above.

In the steps that follow, the following assumptions are made:

  • You have successfully installed the Palm OS Emulator and a Palm OS software version 3.1 or above ROM image.
  • You are familiar with the operation of the Emulator to load and run Palm OS applications.
  • You have successfully installed Palm Desktop software, including HotSync Manager.

To configure the Emulator for synchronization via network connection, perform the following steps:

  1. Ensure HotSync Manager is running on the workstation.
  2. Ensure that the HotSync Manager is configured for 'Network' synchronization. Right-click on the HotSync icon in the Windows system tray and ensure that HotSync Manager is configured for 'Network' synchronization. This is indicated by a checkmark next to the 'Network' menu item. Note: Other synchronization methods such as 'Local', 'Local Serial' or 'Modem' can also be checked.
  3. Enable network synchronization for your HotSync Manager user. Right-click on the HotSync icon in the Windows system tray and select 'Setup''. Select the 'Network' preferences tab and ensure the HotSync Manager user that you wish to use for synchronization with the Emulator is enabled for network synchronization (see Figure 3).
  4. Start the Emulator on the local workstation.
  5. Configure the Emulator to redirect NetLib calls. Right-click on the Emulator device skin to pop-up the application menu. Select 'Settingsà Properties'' and set the 'Redirect NetLib calls to host TCP/IP' option (see Figure 4). The 'Serial Port' can be configured to 'None', but this is not required.
  6. Start the HotSync application on the Emulator (see Figure 5).
  7. Tap on the 'Menu' softkey in the Emulator. The 'Options' menu should appear as shown in Figure 6.
  8. Set the Modem Sync preferences in the Emulator. Select 'OptionsàModem Sync Prefs'' and tap on the 'Network' option (see Figure 7). Tap 'OK'.
  9. Set the LANSync preferences in the Emulator. Select 'Optionsà LANSync Prefs'' and tap on the 'LANSync' option (see Figure 8). Tap 'OK'.
  10. Set the Primary PC Setup preferences in the Emulator. Select 'Optionsà Primary PC Setup'' and set the 'Primary PC Address' to 127.0.0.1 for local loopback (see Figure 9). Tap 'OK'.
  11. Select the 'Modem' push button (see Figure 10). Tap 'Select Service' found below the Sync icon. The network preferences Form will be displayed (see Figure 11). Simply tap on 'Done'. You do not need to change any info, but you need to have a profile selected.
  12. Initiate a HotSync operation by clicking on the 'Modem Sync' icon (see Figure 12). Note: A network HotSync operation CANNOT be initiated by the 'HotSync' menu item in the Emulator application menu. You may be asked to choose an account, or create a new account. It is highly recommended that you create a new account solely for use with the Emulator.

If configured correctly, a HotSync operation now begins between the POSE "device" and the HotSync Manager on the desktop computer.
